Haematology (Phoenix Unit)

The Phoenix Unit provides haematology services for patients in the South of Tyne region. It is responsible for clinical and laboratory haematology services at Sunderland Royal Hospital, South Tyneside District Hospital and at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Gateshead.

The Phoenix Unit is the Trust's Chemotherapy, Haematology and Infusion Day Unit. Sunderland is recognised as a Cancer Unit and is part of the North of England Cancer Network. The Phoenix Unit is a hub for a range of settings for the provision of chemotherapy service - hospital, home and outreach - depending on a patient's preference and treatment type.

The home chemotherapy service allows patients to have their treatment in the comfort of their own home and also provides them with a choice of where it is most convenient and suitable to receive therapy. Outreach Service is provided from Washington Primary Care Centre. Inpatient chemotherapy is delivered to haematology patients only at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

The Phoenix Unit is open Monday to Friday between 8.30 am and 7 pm and Saturday between 8.30 am and 2.30 pm.

Phoenix Unit objectives

  • Provide an efficient and safe treatment service for patients requiring chemotherapy within the unit, their own home environment or nearer to their home within the Outreach Service
  • Provide adequate and appropriate research based information to patients
  • Ensure patients and their carers are aware of all relevant professional support and other agencies that may be appropriate to their care and referred if required
  • Inform GPs and district nurses of the patient's progress
  • Identify patients who may benefit from having chemotherapy or supportive treatments in the home and outreach setting
  • Ensuring continuity for the patient by providing a named nurse who will deliver their care over an agreed period of time.
