Application forms for all work experience placements can be requested by contacting the Work Experience and Apprentice Manager.

Due to demand for placements, City Hospitals Sunderland restricts placements to students attending Sunderland Schools and Colleges. On some occasions we will consider requests from outside the Sunderland area, however this is dependent on availability of placements and no guarantees can be made.

The NHS is not just about Doctors and Nurses – there are around 300 different careers in the NHS and here at City Hospitals Sunderland we offer a range of experiences to a range of ages.

Just to name a few departments, we have a Catering Department, a Sterile Services Department, Portering and Security, Administration, Therapy Services (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics, Podiatry, Speech and Language Therapy), an Estates Department, Radiology, Pharmacy and of course Doctors and Nurses!

If you would like to complete work experience at City Hospitals Sunderland we ask that you have a genuine interest in your chosen placement and will come in with a positive attitude and lots of enthusiasm! 

Work Experience: 14-16 year olds
Due to the nature of the services we provide it is not always suitable to place Year 10 & 11 students into a clinical environment. We have therefore introduced a clinical taster week which aims to provide students with an insight into the variety of clinical careers available in NHS, including Pharmacy, Pathology, Therapies, Medicine, Nursing and much more.

Unfortunately the weeks for the academic year of 2012 – 2013 are now full, however requests will be considered for the academic year of 2013- 2014.

Requests for placements in administration will also be considered.

Work Experience: 16-18 year olds
This section covers work experience for college and sixth form students. All placements must be applied for and are also subject to interview to ensure a fair selection process.

Medical Shadowing
Medical shadowing opportunities for the academic year of 2012-2013 are now full. If you attend a Sunderland Sixth Form or College or are a mature student from Sunderland and are interested in a medical shadowing placement during the academic year of 2013-2014 you must attend the information event on Thursday 3rd October, 2pm - 5pm. Nursing
Nursing shadowing opportunities for the academic year of 2012-2013 are now full. If you live in Sunderland and are interested in a medical shadowing placement you must attend the information event on Thursday 3rd October, 2pm - 5pm. Midwifery
Midwifery shadowing and volunteering opportunities for the academic year of 2012-2013 are now full. Requests are currently being taken for the summer of 2013 onwards. Please request an application form if you are interested.  

Other Areas
Placements are available within Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Radiology, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Dietetics. Due to demand, placements are offered as a one day observational placement. Please contact the work experience team if you require a placement in one of these areas.

Placements are also available within administration. Requests for other areas will be considered.

Work Experience: Job Seekers
City Hospitals Sunderland has been working on placement programmes with Job Centre Plus, Working Links and Shaw Trust. If you would like to find out more about these placement opportunities, which are available in a variety of areas, please contact the Work Experience & Apprentice Manager.

Volunteering

Apprenticeships
Springboard Sunderland Trust co-ordinate all of the administrative and care apprenticeships offered at City Hospitals Sunderland, and any vacancies for apprentices within City Hospitals are advertised by Springboard using the National Apprenticeship Service website. During your apprenticeship you would not be an employee of the Trust, but would be placed here whilst undertaking a relevant NVQ.
