Student Support Guidance

This guidance is aimed at identifying students who:

  • May require support to achieve learning outcomes;
  • Have pastoral issues;
  • Have frequent reported absences.

The aim is to identify and pro-actively manage students

  • To highlight any health issues which may require early intervention and support;
  • To inform and support students who are not progressing towards successful completion of their learning outcomes;
  • To promote professionalism.
  1. Students who are expected / suspected to receive a ‘u’ grade in any assessment should be highlighted asap to the Clinical Nurse Lecturer (CNL) via phone or e mail.
  2. CNL will e mail relevant students and request an appointment asap to discuss their progress and ensure appropriate remedial work is planned.  Students will be clearly informed of the potential for a ‘u’ grade.
  3. Students will be referred to the Clinical Sub Dean as indicated
  4. All communication will be documented on MedSAS.
  5. Students with 3 or more absences (either authorised/unauthorised) within an eight week period will be referred to the Clinical Nurse Lecturer (CNL) for health surveillance interview.
  6. Wear Base Administrator to inform CNL of above students
  7. CNL will e-mail relevant students and request an appointment asap
  8. Students will be seen and if necessary referred to appropriate services (e.g. GP, Occupational Health, Clinical Sub Dean)
  9. A note will be entered onto MedSAS that students have been seen. Students will be informed of this and consent obtained and documented.
  10. If appropriate a ‘Cause for Concern’ form will be completed.
  11. Students will be seen after any subsequent absence, reviewed and referred from point 6
  12. Teaching Fellows can refer any students to the CNL where there is concern around health issues irrespective of any absence.
  13. If appropriate Teaching Fellows may choose to provide pastoral support for students themselves. However they should inform the CNL of this.

Students may self refer to the CNL if required.
