Welcome
City Hospitals Sunderland became an NHS Foundation Trust with effect from Thursday 01 July 2004. We are one of ten organisations that were authorised as a Foundation Trust on that date, bringing the total, at that time, to twenty.
City Hospitals Sunderland continues to make education, training and personal development a priority. Tangible evidence of this can be found in the investment of £2.2M of its own funds added to the central funding received to build the Education Centre.
The Education Centre was opened in April 2004 by Prof. Sir Liam Donaldson and is recognised as one of the foremost education centres in the Northern Deanery.
The Trust is committed to modernisation and this includes modernisation of our teaching and training. The concepts of multi-disciplinary teaching and training are now well-established within the Trust, with non-medical clinicians delivering much high quality teaching as well as teaching and training being delivered to mixed groups where appropriate.
We have embraced the concept of "Modernising Medical Careers" and have put together a Foundation Programme that will deliver the knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies required by The Department of Health, the GMC and the Postgraduate Institute for Medicine and Dentistry. We also believe that our programme will provide an excellent grounding for entry into Basic Speciality Training programmes.
