Introduction
We provide a highly regarded specialist service for children, young people and adults who have a range of disorders of communication, eating, drinking and swallowing. We aim to achieve excellent outcomes by working in partnership with our clients, families/carers, schools/nurseries, nursing and medical staff and the wider professional team.
We encourage people to take responsibility for their own care and progress throughout their speech and language therapy.
HOW TO ACCESS SUNDERLAND SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY (SALT) SERVICE
We operate an open referral system. Clients / Parents / Carers can refer themselves or a referral can be made by a professional working with them e.g. GP, Health Visitor, Care Staff, Education Staff, and Consultant.

Contact the Adult SALT Department. on 0191 569 9009, or write to the department, giving details of the client and their difficulties.

WHAT WE DO
Speech and Language Therapy can take different forms based on individual needs and often involves others in delivering the therapy. This will include assessment, diagnosis and where difficulties are identified an agreed management plan, reviews / evaluations and timely discharge.
We aim to:
- Make a real difference to everyday lives
- Involve clients in making goals
- Refer to specialists were this is needed
- Make therapy fun for children
- Provide support and training to others delivering therapy
- Encourage all methods of language and communication –e.g. speech, signing, symbols, hi-tech communication aids

There is an Inpatient and Outpatient service for adults at Sunderland Royal Hospital and wider community support in homes / clinic settings.

Children’s services are delivered from 7 locality team bases across Sunderland and North Easington working closely with staff in Mainstream Schools and Nurseries. Specialist teams deliver services in many locations across the city e.g. local schools and nurseries, specialist educational provisions, hospital and homes.
Therapists are HPC (Health Professional Council) registered and CRB checked
Support staff are CRB checked.
