The Phoenix Unit (Oncology, Chemotherapy and Haematology Day Unit - CHDU)
Introduction
The Oncology service at City Hospital Sunderland (CHS) provides a number of clinics for new and review patients referred for non-surgical cancer treatments such as: Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy and some other newly established treatments. A number of Oncologists from the Northern Cancer Centre for Treatment (NCCT) at Newcastle, undertake clinics in Sunderland and manage a range of treatments across tumour types, including Urology, Colorectal, Breast, Lung, Upper GI, Head and Neck and Gynaecological cancers. Multidisciplinary meetings to discuss and monitor patient progress are also held on the CHS site.
Outpatient clinics are held at CHS Chester Wing, with a qualified nurse who is part of the Chemotherapy and Haematology Day Unit team, supporting these clinics.
Oncology Chemotherapy treatments at Sunderland are administered as day case treatments in the Phoenix Unit ). However, there is also a Home Chemotherapy Service for patients and treatments which are judged suitable and these are administered by a Chemotherapy trained nurse from the Phoenix Unit.
The CHS site also has a Nurse Consultant in Oncology to manage and support patients and their families when patients are admitted with complications to their cancer treatments.
