Introduction
Maternity Services
Sunderland maternity unit was purpose built and was opened in 2000. It is situated on Level D in the Chester Wing. The unit incorporates an antenatal clinic, antenatal day care unit (ANDCU), Ultrasound facilities and a Counselling suite. In close proximity is an antenatal/postnatal ward and a delivery suite providing a (LDRP) Labour, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum concept of care. The unit also contains a main operating theatre and a four bedded High Dependency Unit.
There are both consultant and midwifery led antenatal Clinics held on site, these clinics provide high-risk care for women. Team midwives provide low – risk care (midwifery led) to all women in the community.
There is a well-established Antenatal Day Care Unit and as a result of increased day care activity, fewer inpatient admissions are now required.
Gynaecology Ward
The ward has 24 beds (3 six-bedded areas and 6 side rooms). This is a dedicated facility providing specialist nursing care for patients with gynaecological, urological and breast conditions.
Gynaecology Outpatients
Gynaecology outpatient facilities are provided in a dedicated suite of rooms within the main Outpatient Department in the Chester Wing of Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Various procedures are carried out in this facility including:
General Consultation, Colposcopy, Pessary insertion and management
The Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit is situated in Chester Lodge and utilises a multidisciplinary approach to the care of women with threatened miscarriage in early pregnancy.
Fertility services are provided in Chester Lodge, Ryhope Hospital and Monkwearmouth Hospital.
Sexual health Services
The Department of Genitourinary medicine is situated in a separate building on the Sunderland Royal Hospital site
